2009 in Review – German Baseball-Bundesliga – Mannheim Tornados

A few weeks ago, we started our review series. After the Dutch Hoofdklasse, the Italian Baseball League and the Spanish Division de Honor, we now direct our attention to the German Baseball-Bundesliga.

Mannheim Tornados

2009 Record: 15-9
2009 Ranking: 3rd place in southern division of Baseball-Bundesliga. They defeated the Paderborn Untouchables and the Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg in the first two rounds of the playoffs, but lost in the German finals for the second straight year, in five games against the Heidenheim Heidekoepfe. They dominated the European Cup Qualifier in Antwerp, Belgium and took home first place, but decided against playing the European Cup Playoff in September.

Runs Scored: 154
Runs Allowed: 97

Best Batter: Marvin Appiah. The 26-year-old outfielder batted a second-best .411 (OBP .459/SLG .632) with five homeruns, 22 runs scored and 32 RBI in 24 games. He added five more homeruns, nine runs scored and 16 RBI during the 14 games of the postseason schedule.

Most Runs Scored: Sascha Lutz 33 (led league)

Best Pitcher: Rene Franke. He had a 7-2 record with an ERA of 1.51 in eleven games (eight starts). He struck out 49 in 71 2/3 innings, while walking 33.
