2009 in Review – German Baseball-Bundesliga – Cologne Cardinals

A few weeks ago, we started our review series. After the Dutch Hoofdklasse, the Italian Baseball League and the Spanish Division de Honor, we now direct our attention to the German Baseball-Bundesliga.

Cologne Cardinals

2009 Record: 12-20 (including play downs)
2009 Ranking: 5th place in northern division of Baseball-Bundesliga.
Runs Scored: 103 (in regular season)
Runs Allowed: 166 (in regular season)

Best Batter: Sascha Steffens. The 27-year-old center fielder batted a league-best .474 (OBP .613/SLG .526) with three doubles, 13 runs scored and five RBI in 22 games.
Best OPS: Sascha Steffens 1.139 (3rd in league)
Most Home Runs: Markus Stryczek 1
Most RBI: Florian Nehring, Markus Stryczek 16
Most Runs Scored: Anderson Alvarez Echavarria 20

Best Pitcher: Kalev Betancourt. The 25-year-old had a 6-4 record with an ERA of 2.05 in eleven starts. He struck out 73 in 88 innings pitched, while walking 27. Especially the Bonn Capitals had no shot in stopping Betancourt. In two starts during the regular season he allowed just four hits in 16 innings, while collecting 22 strikeouts, followed by a ten-strikeout five-hitter in the play downs.

Most Strikeouts: Kalev Betancourt 73 (5th in league)
Most Walks: Pascal Raab 74 (most in league)
