San Marino wins Opener of Italian Series in Nettuno

T&A SAN MARINO takes a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven Italian Series, after winning 7-1 in NETTUNO on Friday. They scored five runs in the ninth to blow a close game wide open.

They took a fast 1-0 advantage in the top of the second, when Simone Albanese reached with a two-out walk, advanced to second on a single by Adolfo Matamoros and beat the throw to home on a RBI single by James Buccheri. Dean Rovinelli made it 2-0 in the top of the sixth with a solo homerun over the fence in center field.

DANESI finally came through in the bottom of the frame, cutting the deficit to a run after Igor Schiavetti singled in Juan Camilo, who got on base with a walk. With runners on the corners and two out, Paolino Ambrosino struck out to end the inning without tying the game.

In the ninth SAN MARINO decided the outcome definitely. They loaded the bases. Seth La Fera and Martin Vazquez followed with back-to-back two-run singles. Max DiBiase completed the five-run rally with a RBI double.

Horacio Estrada (W 1-0, picture) allowed three hits, a run and two walks in 5 2/3 innings. Juan Figueroa and Brian Looney (S 1) closed it out to seal the win. Nelson Cruz (L 0-1) gave up eight hits, two runs and a base on balls in seven innings to take the loss.
