San Marino stuns Nettuno in Extra Innings, take lead in Italian Series

Each team had won once in the first two games of the Italian Series in Nettuno, when they resumed play on Monday in San Marino. DANESI overcame a 1-4-deficit to force extra innings, but lost 4-5 after the tenth. Martin Vazquez delivered the decisive hit with a walk off RBI single.

NETTUNO had tied the game in the top of the ninth through Giuseppe Mazzanti’s sac fly. They had chances to win the match afterwards, but failed to bring Juan Camilo in from third in the ninth and neither scored when they loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the tenth. Back-to-back leadoff homeruns by Camilo and Mazzanti in the top of the eighth had cut the deficit to a run.

SAN MARINO started strong and led 3-1 after four innings and added an insurance run in the seventh. In the end they were lucky to escape with the win. James Buccheri drove in two. Adolfo Matamoros went three-for-four with two runs scored.

Carlos Richetti (NET) struck out seven in eight innings. He allowed eight hits, four runs and three base on balls. Luca Martignoni (SMA) gave up three runs on five hits and seven walks in seven-plus innings. Seth La Fera picked up the win with 2 2/3 innings of relief. Marco Costantini took the loss.
