2011 in Review – Dutch Hoofdklasse – Vaessen Pioniers

As we did in the last couple of years, we want to use the offseason to look back at the statistical performances by the teams in Europe’s top baseball leagues this past season. At the plate for the first part is the Dutch Hoofdklasse.

Vaessen Pioniers

2011 Record: 25-16 (one tie)
2011 Ranking: 2nd. Despite several player departures, a new sponsor and new coaching staff, the Vaessen Pioniers nearly went all the way in the Dutch Hoofdklasse in 2011. Making the playoffs as the number four team with a 25-16-1 record, the Pioniers dominated in the round robin semi-finals with six wins in nine games to reach the Holland Series. In the best-of-seven championship series L&D Amsterdam turned out to be too strong in five games.
Runs Scored: 250 (4th)
Runs Allowed: 167 (3rd)

Best Batter: Nik Gumeson. The American import batted .315 (OBP .378/SLG .467) with four homeruns, 13 doubles, 31 runs and 40 RBI in 42 games.
Best OPS: Mervin Gario .884

Most RBI: Nik Gumeson 40
Most Runs Scored: Michael Duursma 33
Most Stolen Bases: Norbert Lokhorst, Jefferson Muzo 11

Best Pitcher: Eddie Aucoin. The right-hander went 11-1 with an ERA of 1.98 in 14 starts. He struck out 84 batters in 100 innings, while walking just 12.

Best ERA Reliever: Jan Rehacek 1.40
Most Strikeouts: Eddie Aucoin 84
