UNIPOL BANCA won a 13-inning thriller in game one of the best-of-three Coppa Italia semi-final against GROSSETO. Joseph Mazzuca (3-5) delivered the decisive hit for the 2-1 victory with a RBI single in the fourth extra inning. Claudio Liverziani had reached with a leadoff walk, stole second and beat the throw to home to score.
MONTEPASCHI had taken a 1-0 lead in the third, when Davide Dallospedale drove in Riccardo Ferretti with a single. But FORTITUDO came back and tied the score in the sixth through a Manuel Gasparri RBI single.
Chris Cooper (GRO) started for the 2007 Italian champion and struck out twelve in six innings. He allowed four hits, an unearned run and three walks. The reliever Yovany D’Amico and Anthony Ferrari combined to throw six one-hit innings. But the offense failed to provide the necessary run support. Cody Cillo (BOL) gave up one run on five hits in eight innings. He had seven strikeouts. Chris George picked up the win. Leonardo D’Amico took the loss.
