Analysing Numbers: Spanish Baseball

We are continuing today our series about statistical leaders in European Baseball. After Switzerland and Sweden, we are looking at Spain in this edition.

The Marlins Puerto Cruz received the championship trophy after winning the finals against FC Barcelona. Both teams dominated all major statistical categories too. The Marlins led the league with .342 batting average and an ERA of 1.43. Runner-ups were El Llano (.300) in the batting standings, and Barcelona (ERA 2.25) in pitching.

Individual, the rankings looked not so monotonous. Jhonny CARVAJAL of San Inazio Bilbao won the batting title with a .449 average. Dewis NAVARRO (.402) from Puerto Cruz led the league with 35 RBI. Felix ISASI (FC Barcelona) scored the most runs with 38. Richard MONTIEL (Marlins Puerto Cruz) and Hector PEROZO (CAD Irabia) each slugged seven homeruns out of the ballparks in Spain. Juan NIEVES (San Inazio Bilbao) and Rafael RIVAS (CD Amaya) were co-leaders with 23 stolen bases.

The team standing mirrors in the pitching categories. Five hurlers of the Marlins and of Barcelona are on top of the ERA-Ranking. Leslie NACAR (Marlins Puerto Cruz) and Remigio LEAL (FC Barcelona) won nine games each. Yoel HERNANDEZ (Marlins Puerto Cruz) had the lowest ERA (0.56), right in front of LEAL (0.79). There are ten pitchers with at least 30 innings pitched with an ERA under two. German ARROYO (CAD Irabia) had the most strikeouts (121) in the most innings pitched (123). Overall there are only four pitchers with innings totals over 100.
