Analysing Numbers: Swiss Baseball

Posted on December 22, 2007 by philipp

Over the next two weeks, we will take a look at some statistics in European Baseball. Today we’ll start with the Swiss Baseball League.

The Bern Cardinals won the Swiss championship in dominant style. They lost just two of the twenty games during the regular season and swept both playoff-series. Overall they hit .329 as a team with 27 homeruns and 302 runs scored. Their pitching staff led the league with an ERA of 2.36. The Zurich Challengers, Zurich Barracudas and Reussbuehl Eagles followed right behind the squad from the Swiss capital.

Top 5 Team Batting Average:
Bern Cardinals .329
Zurich Barracudas .324
Zurich Challengers .314
Lausanne Indians .308
Therwil Flyers .308

Top 5 Team ERA:
Bern Cardinals 2.36
Reussbuehl Eagles 3.31
Therwil Flyers 3.61
Zurich Challengers 3.93
Zurich Barracudas 4.81

The most dangerous batter was also on the roster of the Swiss champion. Jhonny PERIGO hit .531 with nine homeruns, 33 runs scored and 42 RBI.

Top 5 Individual Batting Average:
(Minimum 60 At-Bats)
Jhonny PERIGO (Bern Cardinals) .531 (9 HR, 33 R, 42 RBI)
Alexis RAMIREZ (Lausanne Indians) .471 (7 HR, 17 R, 27 RBI)
Thomas LANDIS (Zurich Challengers) .448 (4 HR, 28 R, 29 RBI)
Chicco COLINDRES (Zurich Barracudas) .437 (1 HR, 29 R, 17 RBI)
Tom HUSTON (Reussbuehl Eagles) .433 (4 HR, 20 R, 28 RBI)

But the key for the Cardinals victorious season was the pitching staff. John BAUM and Severin FRIES had no problems with the opposing line-ups. BAUM led the league with a 5-1 record and a 0.48 ERA. He struck out 75 in 58.1 innings pitched. FRIES was on the same level. He posted a 8-0 record with a 1.72 ERA. However the strikeout leader started for the Reussbuehl Eagles. Peter SOSKIN got 130 K´s in 89 innings pitched. Despite these numbers and a 1.42 ERA he managed only a 6-4 record due to a lack of run-support.

Top 5 Individual ERA:
(Minimum 30 Innings pitched)
John BAUM (Bern Cardinals) 0.48 (5-1, 75 SO, 58.1 IP)
Peter SOSKIN (Reussbuehl Eagles) 1.42 (6-4, 130 SO, 89 IP)
Severin FRIES (Bern Cardinals) 1.72 (8-0, 40 SO, 44.2 IP)
Stefan KOLLER (Therwil Flyers) 1.98 (6-3, 69 SO, 67.1 IP)
Harry BREGY (Zurich Challengers) 2.07 (6-3, 71 SO, 67.1 IP)
