Since over ten years there is the Italian Winter League, a national indoor tournament for teams at the youth level. This week Baseball.it reported about an initiative by clubs in the north-east and Emilia Romagna region in Italy to create a similar league in the summer months. The organizers are still working out the last details, but the “Summer League” is supposed to start in March 2010 and should last until July. It would be played similar to the Winter League format with regional competitions in the preliminary phase and a national tournament in the end. Game days would be on Sundays with two matches apiece. The organizers hope to avoid interfering with the federal championships and are aiming to create more playing opportunities for the young athletes.
