Chinese Taipei – Cuba 2-1
Not even 24 hours after losing 1-3 against Cuba, Chinese Taipei got some payback against the same opponent on Friday afternoon. The team from Taiwan defeated the record world title holder 2-1 to improve to 3-2 in the 2013 World Port Tournament. Chinese Taipei took a 2-0 lead in the fourth thanks to a RBI single by Chia Wei Huang and the following RBI triple by Guo Long Luo. Cuba only was able to counter with Eriel Sanchez’ run in the fifth who scored on a groundout. Cuba had several other opportunities to score, but failed to score. Tsun Hao Wang allowed eight hits, a run and two walks in eight strong innings. Jorge Hernandez took the loss.
Netherlands – Curacao 5-4
The Netherlands defeated Curacao 5-4 to keep its final chances alive in the evening game at the WPT on Friday. Both teams exchanged three runs apiece in the fifth. Then the Dutch broke the tie with a RBI double by Vince Rooi and a sac fly by Shaldimar Daantji in the sixth. Quincy Ascencion cut the deficit to a run with a RBI single in the top of the eighth. But Shurrendell Mujica was thrown out at the plate during the same play to miss the tie.
Raywenly Gurp finished with two RBI for Curacao. Stijn van der Meer had three hits for the Dutch. Kevin Heijstek gave up four hits, three runs and a walk in five innings. Chris Mowday picked up the win in relief. Raydell Isabella surrendered two hits, three runs and three bb in 4 2/3 frames for Curacao. Duko Jansen was charged with the loss.
