The 7th Women’s Baseball World Cup in Gijang City, Korea concluded its preliminary phase on Monday with a big surprise. Two-time World Champion USA, which has finished on the podium in each of the previous six Women’s Baseball World Cups, missed out on qualification for the Super Round Robin. After capturing two wins on the first two days, they lost 2-10 against Australia and therefore had the unlucky hand in the tiebreaker, as the team from Down Under and Chinese Taipei advance from Pool C.
Joining them in the Super Round are Venezuela and Japan with perfect 3-0 records, as well as host Korea and Canada. The Maple Leafs downed the Netherlands 7-1 on Monday. A respectable result for the Dutch team against one of the Women’s Baseball power houses. Other day-three results include a 15-0 shutout by Cuba over Pakistan, an 18-0 rout of Japan against India, a 13-3 win by Chinese Taipei over Hong Kong and a 12-1 demonstration by Venezuela against Korea.
The 12 teams now will be split up into a Super Round Robin and the Consolation Round. The top two teams from the Super Round advance to the Championship Game on Sunday. The Dutch team is facing Cuba on Wednesday. Four years ago the Dutch beat Cuba in the game for seventh place at the 2012 Women’s Baseball World Cup in Edmonton. It was their last win at the international stage until the Dutch opening day win over India.
On Tuesday will be a rest day.
