#WomensBaseball World Cup Gijang City: Japan wins 5th Consecutive Title

Posted on September 12, 2016 by philipp

Japan has won its fifth title at Women’s Baseball World Cups with a 10-0 shutout over Canada in the Gold Medal Game on Sunday in Gijang City, Korea. They remained undefeated in the tournament and haven’t lost a game since the 2012 Women’s Baseball World Cup in Edmonton. Ayami Sato kept the Maple Leafs to two hits and a walk in seven scoreless innings. Four players scored twice. Chihiro Funakoshi went 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Venezuela completed an incredible comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning to turn a 0-3 deficit into a 4-3 win over Chinese Taipei, claiming bronze. It’s their first medal in tournament history and their best finish since a fourth place at the 2010 Women’s Baseball World Cup.

The Netherlands, which picked up three wins in the tournament over India, Hong Kong and Pakistan, got ranked ninth in the final standings. Team USA, which lost just one game, claimed seventh place after cruising through the consolation round. Two players of the Dutch team were awarded during the closing ceremony. Famke Gildemacher was named most outstanding player in the tournament, while Esther Maliepaard claimed the award for the most stolen bases.
