16 games were played on Tuesday at the Women’s Softball European Championship in Rosmalen, Netherlands with the playoff picture getting clearer. The hosts, Russia, Czech Republic and Italy already have been qualified for the second round. The other four teams will be decided on Tuesday morning and early afternoon. The next phase then already starts in the evening. Only the top two of each pool advance.
The game day on Monday was highlighted by a pair of thrilling extra-inning affairs. Slovakia edged out Switzerland 8-7 in eight innings. Slovakia tied the game with two runs in the seventh and then won it on a throwing error with two outs shortly after a runner was thrown out at the plate. Spain and France then even needed ten innings with Spain prevailing 9-8. It was a back and forth battle with each team scoring at least once in each of the three extra frames. In the end a RBI single by Aroia Goicoechea ended the contest. Melissa Mayeux, who had finished the U18 Baseball European Championship on Sunday, played right field for France and went 1-for-4 with a run and a RBI.
