WBSC U18 Baseball World Cup: Japan strikes out 23 in loss to USA #u18worldcup

Posted on September 3, 2017 by philipp

Day two of the WBSC U18 Baseball World Cup in Thunder Bay was dominated by a couple of thunder storms, rain delays and dominating pitching performances in the highly touted matchup between Japan and USA. Only four of the scheduled six games were played. Canada vs Nicaragua and Mexico vs South Africa were postponed to a late date.

Meanwhile Japan and USA exchanged 33 strikeouts. Japan’s pitchers Kento Kawabata, Fumimaru Taura and Shumpei Isomura combined for 23 alone. However thanks to a two-run home run by Triston Casas the United States won the game 4-0. They even scored a run on a pair of strikeouts. Ryan Weathers struck out eight to pick up the win. The game was delayed 90 minutes before the game and 90 more in the top of the second after a pair of thunder storms.

In the other games the Netherlands lost 0-3 against Cuba, their second loss in the tournament. Luuk Ter Beek, Aaron De Groot and Donny Breek kept Cuba to three runs through nine innings. But their offense wasn’t able to score against the opposing pitching. Italy dropped to 1-1 with a 1-15 loss to Australia. Eight runs in the fifth blew the score wide open. In the fourth game of the day Korea downed Chinese Taipei 8-2.
