Mexico needed just five hits to score 11 runs against Nicaragua en route to an 11-0 shutout on Friday at the World Baseball Classic Qualifier in Mexicali. With the victory they advance to the final, while Nicaragua squares off against the Czech Republic on Saturday to determine the second finalist.
Mexico scored four runs in the first two frames and five in the fourth to blow the game wide open. They took advantage of seven walks and three errors by the Nicaraguan defense. Four players scored twice including Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Adrian Gonzalez. Augustin Murillo went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
On the mound five pitchers combined in a four-hit shutout. Stephen Landazuri got the win, conceding just one hit in four scoreless frames, striking out four. Carlos Teller took the loss, lasting just one-plus frames.
