Mexico scored six runs in the second and five in the fifth to blow out Nicaragua 12-1 in the final of the World Baseball Classic Qualifier at Estadio B’Air in Mexicali, Mexico on Sunday evening. With the victory Mexico returns to the main tournament of the World Baseball Classic in March 2017.
Doubles by Esteban Quiroz and Augustin Murillo plated five of the six runs during the six-run second. In the fifth Quiroz and Leo Heras connected for a pair of home runs to highlight the five-run rally. Elmer Reyes was only able to avoid a shutout against Nicaragua, when he plated Dwight Britton with a single in the seventh.
For Mexico it was the second rout over Nicaragua in the WBCQ in Mexicali. In the winner’s matchup on day two they had won by a score of 11-0. Mexico also defeated the Czech Republic 2-1, while Nicaragua defeated Germany 5-4 and the Czech Republic 7-6 on their way to the finals. The Czech finished in third place, Germany in fourth. The Czech had beaten 15-3 on day two.
