Nate Freiman hit two more homeruns and led Israel to a 4-2 win over Spain and into the final of the World Baseball Classic Qualifier on Sunday. Spain gets a second chance on Saturday against the winner of the duel between France and South Africa on Friday evening.
Freiman already had two solo homeruns in their opening win over South Africa and connected for two two-run shots in the sixth and the eighth to spark Israel at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Florida on Friday afternoon. Spain couldn’t do much on offense. Only Rafael Alvarez and Yasser Gomez were able to do anything productive with a RBI single and a RBI groundout in the sixth and the ninth.
Justin Schumer pitched 5 2/3 effective innings to pick up the win for Israel. He allowed just one unearned run on six hits and a walk, while striking out one. Richard Salazar was charged with the loss, issuing four hits, two runs (1 ER) and a base on balls in six frames.
