Great Britain narrowly missed out on its second victory at the World Baseball Classic (WBC) on Tuesday, losing 2-1 (box) to Mexico in the team’s final game in Group C in Phoenix, while in Group D, Israel’s offense again failed to put a run on the board, with the Dominican Republic prevailing 10-0 (box) in a seven-inning contest.
Team GB Finishes Group Play With 1-3 Record
A day after Great Britain’s first WBC victory, 7-5 over Colombia, Drew Spencer’s squad entered the bottom of the seventh inning with a good chance to secure its second. But with the score tied at one, Tahnaj Thomas, a Bahamian RHP in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, walked the lead-off hitter Alan Trejo, who later advanced to second on a wild pitch, setting the stage for Alexis Wilson to drive in the go-ahead run — and his second RBI of the game — for Mexico.
Team GB’s offense, which only had four hits on the day, went down in order in the eighth and ninth innings, bringing an end to Team GB’s inaugural run at the WBC.
DR Is Too Much For Israel
A day after losing 10-0 to Puerto Rico in an eight-inning perfect game, Israel’s offense again failed to gain traction, with a single by Spencer Horwitz, a Toronto Blue Jays minor leaguer, the only hit of the game for Team Israel in a seven-inning, 10-0 defeat to the Dominican Republic.
Israel is now 1-2 in group play in Miami and will face undefeated Venezuela (3-0) on Wednesday in its final group game at the 2023 WBC.
