Dutch teams have beaten Cuba in the past few years on a regular basis. But what happened on Wednesday in the second round of the 2017 World Baseball Classic had a different quality. The Netherlands scored 13 runs in the first five innings en route to blowing by Cuba 14-1 in seven innings.
Wladimir Balentien led all batters with two home runs and five RBI. Yurendell De Caster and Kalian Sams also went deep. De Caster finished with four RBI. Victor Mesa drove in Cuba’s lone run in the bottom of the fifth.
On the mound Diegomar Markwell issued four hits and a run in six strong innings for the win. Shairon Martis closed it out. Lazaro Blanco conceded five hits, four runs and a base on balls in 1 2/3 innings to take the loss.
