The Dominican Republic rebounded from their loss to Puerto Rico in the opener of the second round at the 2017 World Baseball Classic with a 3-0 shutout over Venezuela. Venezuela dropped to 0-2. Edinson Volquez and five relievers including New York’s relievers Dellin Betances and Jeurys Familia combined to keep Venezuela off the board.
At the plate Gregory Polanco broke the scoreless tie with a solo home run in the fifth. Two innings later Welington Castillo scored on Robinson Cano’s RBI single to make it 2-0. Nelson Cruz sealed the win with a solo shot in the eighth.
The next game in San Diego will be between Puerto Rico and the United States on Friday evening.
