2013 finalist Puerto Rico beat up 2017 favorite Venezuela 11-0 in their first-round debut of the 2017 World Baseball Classic on Friday evening in Guadalajara. Nine combined runs in the sixth and seventh ended the game with ten-run rule.

A sac fly by TJ Rivera and a bases loaded walk by Carlos Beltran gave Puerto Rico an early 2-0 lead after three innings against Felix Hernandez. In the sixth Carlos Correa and Yadier Molina hit home runs to raise the advantage to 5-0. In the seventh the scoring floodgates opened and Puerto Rico put six runs on the board to end the game. Eddie Rosario with a two-run double and TJ Rivera with a two-run home run had the big hits.

Hernandez conceded two hits, two runs (1 ER) and two walks in 2 2/3 innings to take the loss. He was overmatched by Seth Lugo, who gave up just one hit in 5 1/3 innings for Puerto Rico to pick up the win.
