The Washington Nationals designated right-handed pitcher Shairon Martis for assignment on Monday to make room on the 40-man roster for newly signed utility man Jerry Hairston Jr.. The Major League Baseball organization now has ten days to trade, release or place him on waivers in order to send him to the minors. He had his best moments in the spring of 2009, when he made the starting rotation for the Nationals out of spring training and won his first five starts.
However the league adjusted to Martis, he struggled and got send down to Triple-A. He hasn’t got back to the big leagues since. Overall he had a 6-6 record with an ERA of 5.33 in 20 games for Washington in the MLB. He struck out 57 batters in 106 1/3 innings, while walking 51. In 2010 he took the mound solely for the Nationals Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse, where he had an 8-7 record with an ERA of 4.09 in 27 starts. He struck out 99 in 152 innings, walking 60.
