The German team lost their first World Cup of Baseball game since 1973 0-8 to Venezuela. They managed just three hits against one of the stronger squads of the tournament.
Starting pitcher Enorbel MARQUEZ-RAMIREZ (L 0-1) held the Venezuelan bats mostly off the board at the beginning. He gave up only one run on eight hits in six innings. He struck out seven. But the bullpen with Twins reliever Rodney GESSMANN, Mirko HEID, Nils HARTKOPF and Philipp HOFFSCHILD was hit hard and the Latin Americans run up the score at the end.
Venezuela pounded 16 hits to get an easy victory. Saul TORRES had the big one, with a two-run-homerun.
Luis TORRES (W 1-0) had no problems to go trough the German batting order and received the win.
