Team USA used four homeruns, including two by Mike Hessman (2-5, 3 Runs, 3 RBI) to crush Canada 17-5 in the fourth game of the exhibition series. Terry Tiffee (3 RBI) and Matt LaPorta (2-5, 3 Runs)also homered, as they scored in every of the seven innings, highlighted by nine runs in the fifth. John Gall had three RBI. Nate Schierholtz scored three times.
Emmanuel Garcia hit a two-run homerun for Canada. Mike Saunders also drove in two. It was their third loss in a row, after winning the warm up opener 4-3 last Friday.
Jake Arrieta and Stephen Strasburg each pitched three innings for the USA, allowing a combined seven hits, four runs and two walks, while striking out seven. Chris Reitsma got the starting job for Canada, giving up four runs on four hits in 2 1/3 innings. Fellow former Major Leaguer Rheal Cormier relieved him.
Both team now will take off to China with the maple leafs playing two more test games against the Netherlands on the tournament site in Beijing. The baseball event at the Olympic Games is scheduled to begin on August 13th.
