Host Czech Republic has won the Under-21 European Championship in Brno on Sunday thanks to a 7-2 win in the title game against Russia. They are succeeding Spain, which had won in 2008, also at home in Pamplona.
Russia had the better start into the final, scoring in the opening period on a RBI double by Nikolay Lobanov. But the Czech team came back. Petr Zyma tied the contest with a RBI single in the third. One frame later Jakub Sladek tripled down the right field line to drive in the go-ahead run. An error led to run number three in the sixth. Four runs in the eighth blew things wide open.
Tomas Duffek (W) allowed just one run on six hits in 5 2/3 strong innings for the win. Nikolay Lobanov (L) was charged with eight hits and three runs in six frames, taking the loss. After the game Martin Cervenka, who had driven in two runs in the final, was named MVP of the tournament.
