Italy beat tournament surprise Ireland 7-3 in the Gold Medal Game of the U19 European Softball Championship in Staranzano, Italy on Saturday evening. Italy scored in five of the first six innings en route to the title. Laura Vigna led the team in the final by going 4-for-4 with an inside-the-park home run and four runs scored. Ireland only started their fastpitch softball program three years ago and captured their biggest success so far. The Czech Republic won bronze with a 12-8 win in a slugfest against the Netherlands. Italy, Ireland and the Czech Republic are qualified for next year’s U19 Women’s Softball World Cup.
