At the U18 European Championship Qualifier 2019 in Miesjka Gorka, Poland three games of the preliminary round were played on Thursday. Hungary earned its first win of the week by prevailing 13-11 over Slovenia. An eight-run third innings gave Hungary the lead. Three runs in the fifth secured the win later. Austria improved to 4-0 in the competition with a 10-0 shutout against Ukraine. Marcel Mariette drove in three as part of a three-hit game. Marcel Vitale threw five shutout innings. Austria scored nine of its ten runs in the last two frames.
In the evening game Russia beat Poland 8-7. Russia turned an early 0-4 deficit around with a pair of four-run innings in the third and fourth. Poland threatened to come back, but only managed to get within a run. Austria is already qualified for the final. They will face the 3-1 Russia on Friday on the last day of the first round. With a loss by Russia and a win by Slovenia over Ukraine, Slovenia could trump Russia en route to the final. Otherwise Russia will face Austria in the final.
