Germany has won the U15 European Championship in Brno, Czech Republic. Aside from a couple of title at B-Level European Championships at the senior level, it’s the first European title ever in baseball or softball for the German Baseball and Softball Federation (DBV).
In the Gold Medal Game the German Cadets defeated the Czech Republic 6-5 in a thrilling contest. The host of the tournament took a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first, but Germany slowly chipped away the deficit and took control of the game with a three-run third. After a one-hour rain delay Germany extended the lead to 6-4 in the fourth. The Czech Republic cut the gap to a run on a double in the sixth. They threatened to come back, but a lineout double play in the sixth with two runners in scoring position, as well as a pair of strikeouts by closer Yannis Weber in the seventh with runners on the corners stopped the rallies 90 feet from home.
Demetrio Cataldo (Germany), who scored three runs in the final, was awarded as Best Batter. His teammate Paul Hellwege (Germany), who pitched five strong innings of relief in the final, was named MVP. Artur Bovtach (Ukraine) was named Best Pitcher.
The Ukraine finished in third place due to a 3-2 win over Austria in the Bronze Medal Game in the afternoon.
