Russia – France 6-5
Russia and France met on Thursday afternoon on field one in a crucial matchup for second place in Group B. Russia prevailed 6-5 in an exciting back and forth affair. After starting pitchers Tanguy Meurant for France and Gleb Kosenkov had struck out nine each in four-plus innings both offenses finally came through in the fifth. France scored first taking a 2-0 lead in the top half of the frame. A bases loaded walk and a wild pitch helped to cross the plate twice. However Russia stopped a bigger rally when Meurant lined into a double play thanks to a great diving play by Russian second baseman Denis Alekseenko. In the bottom of the same inning Russia struck back, scoring four runs to get in front. Roman Kochetov had the go-ahead 2-run double. Russia added two more runs in the sixth, which were much needed. France tried to rally in the top of the seventh. They scored three runs and loaded the bases with two outs. However on Anatole Coste’s ground ball to third, Russia’s third baseman Georgii Vavilov beat the runner to the bag to end the game.
