The U12 European Championship in Miejska Gorka, Poland continued on Friday with the semi-finals and the start of the consolation round. Defending champion Russia and the Czech Republic prevailed in the semis and will be playing in the Gold Medal Game on Saturday at 2.30pm.
Russia defeated France 7-6 in a close game and a rematch of last year’s finals. France took a 5-0 lead midway through the fifth, but Russia came back and turned the contest around with four runs in the fifth and three in the sixth.
The second semi-final was a demonstration by the Czech team, which scored six runs in the first and eight apiece in the second and third for a lopsided 22-2 win over host Poland. Matej Vlach and Ondrej Koukal hit home runs and combined for seven RBI.
In the consolation round Belarus prevailed 10-9 over Lithuania to claim fifth place in the final standings. Austria dominated Slovenia 24-7 in four innings to improve to 1-1 in the consolation group for places seventh to ninth. Slovenia and Romania will meet on Saturday.
