In the first of four exhibition games between the Netherlands and Italy, the teams had to settle for a 1-1 tie in Bussum. Eugene Kingsale put the Dutch team ahead in the opening frame, scoring on a RBI fielder’s choice by Bryan Engelhardt. Italy answered in the sixth with a solo homerun by Juan Angrisano.
Rob Cordemans started for the Netherlands and allowed just four hits and a walk in four scoreless innings, striking out five. Marco Grifantini began for the Azzurri and gave up three hits, a run and five bb in also four innings.
Game two of the series will be played in Eindhoven on Wednesday. For games three and four the teams travel to Godo and Ravenna in Italy. The two round-two hosts have a bye in round one of the Baseball World Cup and use the off time to get in shape for the next phase, awaiting their opponents.
