Texas Rangers sign Antillean Prospects

Posted on July 8, 2009July 8, 2009 by philipp

Rogier van Zon of Honkbalsite.com reported that the Texas Rangers have signed the 16-year-old Antillean prospects Jurickson Profar and Chris Garia last weekend besides three other international free agents. Profar is a shortstop, who led Curacao to the title at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania in 2004. He throws 92 MPH and also got scouted by the Cincinnati Reds, Baltimore Orioles and Florida Marlins. Other teams saw him as a pitcher, but the Rangers like him as an infielder. Garia plays the outfield and also was part of the LLWS team in 2004. He actually pursued a career as a sprinter until a hamstring injury four months ago, but is focusing solely on Baseball since then. Last Sunday manager Ron Washington threw batting practice to both acquisitions in Arlington before the Major League game between the Rangers and the Rays. They also played in a youth tournament in Curacao in January, which is hosted by Texas’ outfielder Andruw Jones. They will report to the Dominican Summer League on July 10th.
