The Spanish Cup tournament “Copa del Rey” was played last weekend in Barcelona. The Tenerife Marlins celebrated the first title of the 2013 season in Spanish baseball, defeating CB Barcelona 8-4 in the championship game on Sunday. While the score indicates a slugfest, this wasn’t the case until the tenth inning.
With the game tied at 2-2, Tenerife plated six runs in the top of the first extra inning to decide the outcome. Five hits and two errors helped, as runners were placed on first and second as the IBAF Extra-Inning Tiebreaker Rule was in effect. Deion Galvan and Richard Montiel scored twice. Jose Luis Salazar had three hits and two RBI to lead Puerto Cruz’s offense.
On Saturday Barcelona had shut out CB Viladecans en route to the final. Ricardo Hernandez struck out ten in eight frames in a 3-0 win. Angel Castillo set the offensive highlight with a home run. The Marlins beat the Astros Valencia 10-4 behind 15 strikeouts of Leslie Nacar in a complete game performance. The veteran hurler also earned the win in the final on Sunday, pitching out of relief. Blake Ochoa homered twice for the Astros. In the game for third place Viladecans prevailed 3-2 over Valencia.
