Taiwan concluded the preliminary round with a 6-5 victory over Canada. They finish in fifth and sixth in the tournament with 2-5 records.
Chinese Taipei scored the winning run in the top of the twelfth on Chih-Hsien Chiang’s RBI single, after both teams couldn’t profit from the IBAF tiebreaker rule in the eleventh, when each squad loaded the bases with one out, but failed to get a runner in.
Taiwan also had the better start into the match, scoring five runs in the first two periods to take a 5-3 lead. Che-Hsuan Lin and Chih-Sheng Lin hit homeruns. But Canada came back and tied the contest in the seventh through Stubby Clapp’s solo shot to force extra innings.
Wei-Yin Chen (KOR) allowed seven hits and four runs (3 ER) in 3 1/3 innings. Chih-Chia Chang (W 1-0) picked up the win, after Fu-Te Ni had dominated over five innings of relief, striking out six. Mike Johnson (CAN) started for Canada and gave up six hits, five runs (4 ER) and two base on balls in 3 1/3 innings. Chris Reitsma (L 0-2) took the loss.
