The Bern Cardinals travelled to Zurich to take on the Barracudas on Sunday and the Cardinals out played the Barracudas for 8 and 2/3 innings but could not put the Barracudas away. With the score 6-5 in favor of the Cardinals in the bottom of the 9th inning and two outs Cardinals pitcher Thierry Burkhardt hit Harry Wischnewski to put the tying run on 1st base. Josh Crouse the Barracudas bus driver and league leading RBI man came to the plate and with the count set at 1-2 Crouse hammered a triple to right center scoring Wischnewski who was in motion to tie the game at 6-6 and force extra innings.
The Barracudas Roger Savoldelli completed his perfect three innings of relief to hold the Cardinals and then the Barracudas offense took over and put a run across in the 10th inning to win 7-6. Savoldelli picked up his third win on the season and kept his season ERA at a perfect 0.00.
Cardinals pitcher Thierry Burkhardt kept the Barracudas batters off balance all day long allowing only three hits in his nine innings and took a tough loss. Offensively the Cardinals were led by Sven Ambühl, Thierry Burkhardt and Ernesto Pereira who each had two knocks on the day and combined for five rbi’s.
In game 2, the Cardinals came out strong again and scored four early runs and knocked the Barracudas starter Chris Michals out in the 3rd inning. Simon Steffen came on to stop the Cardinals from creating further damage.
The Barracudas answered back immediately with five hits to score four runs to tie the game at 4-4. Steffen kept the Cardinals in check the next three innings and then the Barracudas erupted for 11 runs in the 6th inning to put the game away 17-5 giving rookie Simon Steffen his second NLA win on the season. Elliot Berger delivered a key bases loaded pinch hit to break the game open. Steffen also produced his first NLA hit in the3rd inning.
The Barracudas will entertain the Sissach Frogs in Zurich on Sunday in the battle for first place.
