Prior to the World Port Tournament in Rotterdam, which starts on Sunday, a Street Baseball Diamond will be officially opened on Friday afternoon in the Dutch city. On hand for the ceremony at 4pm will be the Dutch National Team, KNBSB Technical Director and former Major Leaguer Robert Eenhoorn, Jason Holowaty from MLB International and Dutch National Team Head Coach Steve Janssen among local politicians.
Following the ceremony the Dutch National Team will inaugurate the Street Baseball Diamond with a match against neighborhood kids. Prior to the official ceremony the Baseball Academy Rotterdam Unicorns will do a baseball demonstration at the field. Eenhoorn is behind this project with his initiative of Rotterdam United Baseball, an organization which helps the sport in his home town.
The Street Baseball Diamond was funded with help of the Baseball Tomorrow Fund and the local district. Eenhoorn says in a KNBSB press release, “This will be an incentive for children to work out and come into contact with baseball and softball. This is now an example for Rotterdam, which should be copied by other cities in the Netherlands and Europe.” The field is situated right next to Cruijff Court and Krajicek Playground in Schuttersveld/Rotterdam.
