Spain Takes Gold at 40th Prague Baseball Week

Posted on June 27, 2021July 2, 2021 by MrBB

Team Spain defeated host Czech Republic 9-0 in the final of the 40th Prague Baseball Week to claim the gold medal at the four-day baseball festival.

Spain jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of Saturday’s championship game and never looked back, with its pitching staff allowing just two hits and one free pass in a dominant performance. Starter Joger Balboa struck out seven in six innings of work, with Lowuin Sacramento (2IP, 3K) and Eduard Miliani (1IP) combining for three innings of shutout relief.

The Spanish sluggers, on the other hand, collected 14 hits, including homers by Richard Montiel and Edgar Rondón. Leadoff hitter Roibert Decena, who won the home run derby held before the championship game, added three hits and three runs.

The finals victory followed a 10-9 victory by the Spanish over the host Czechs in group play on Thursday.

The 40th Prague Baseball Week saw the national teams from Spain, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Sweden join the Czech Republic U23 and Czech Republic U18 national teams and a squad of international players selected from among the Czech Extraliga’s imports contest 14 games over four days.

Defending champion Russia was unable to compete due to visa complications, as we noted in our preview [link].
