For the first time in the history of this rather young tournament a non-Japanese team has won the title. The Samsung Lions from South Korea captured the crown at the 2011 Asia Series. It is a Caribbean Series like event for the best club teams in Asia. This year the title holders from Japan (NPB), South Korea (KBO), Taiwan (CPBL) and Australia (ABL) were invited to Taichung from November 25 to 29.
The Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks dominated during the preliminary phase with three wins in three games, which included a 9-0 blowout over the Samsung Lions. However in the championship game, the Samsung Lions prevailed 5-3 to bring the trophy home to Daegu, South Korea. The 2012 Asia Series, its sixth edition, will be played in South Korea next fall and most likely extending to six teams.
