The German team didn’t get much going against the South Korean squad. Their offense pounded them easily and won 12-1. They now have five victories and secured one of the three Olympic berths.
South Korea was ready from the start. They scored two runs in the first through RBI-singles to take a fast 2-0 lead. Donald LUTZ cut the deficit in the top of the second with a solo-homerun over the right field fence. But the Asian powerhouse answered right away. They scored three runs in the bottom of the frame through a passed ball, a RBI-groundout and an error.
After a scoreless third they added six more in the fourth, through a bases-loaded walk, a two-run-single, a RBI-single and a two-run-double. A RBI-groundout in the fifth made it 12-1. The game was called after the top of the seventh due to the ten-run-rule.
Starter Min Han SON (W 2-0) received his second win of the tournament. He allowed four hits, one run and one walk in six innings, while striking out nine.
Tim HENKENJOHANN (L 0-2) was charged with five hits, six runs and three base on balls in three-plus innings. Jens CORNELSEN relieved him after a leadoff walk in the top of the fourth. He was hit hard and only got one out. Benedikt ANTWI replaced him on the mound and closed out the game for Germany.
They are now 2-3 and have to hope for two wins in the remaining matches against Mexico and Canada.
