Softball Worlds: European Teams with Successful Start

The 12th Softball Women’s World Championship in Caracas, Venezuela continued on Thursday with a full sledge of ten games, including the openers for the Netherlands, Great Britain and the Czech Republic. All three European teams picked up wins, while the rematch of last year’s European Championship finals again saw the Dutch team prevailing.

South Africa – Great Britain 0-3

GBR 100 000 2 3 11 0
SAF 000 000 0 0 4 2

Stacie Townsend allowed just four hits and a walk in seven scoreless innings to lead Great Britain to a 3-0 shutout over South Africa in the first game in Venezuela. She struck out eight and also doubled, scored and drove in a run going 3-for-4.

Czech Republic – Dominican Republic 8-4

DOM 040 000 0 4 8 4
CZE 103 103 X 8 8 2

The Czech Republic overcame a 1-4-deficit against the Dominican Republic to kick of the Softball Worlds with an 8-4 victory. Katerina Dvorakova, Dina Pfeiferova and Eva Rendovla scored two runs apiece in the game. Jana Vacikova received the win on the mound, allowing four runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Great Britain – Netherlands 4-5

NED 100 002 2 5 12 0
GBR 000 400 0 4 10 2

The Dutch team overcame 1-4 deficit en route to a 5-4 win over Great Britain in a rematch of last year’s European Championship finals. After Nathalie Gosewehr had put the Netherlands ahead with a solo shot in the opening frame, Caley Roberts highlighted a four-run British rally with a two-run double in the fourth. After the Dutch team put two runs on the board in the sixth, a two-out, two-run double by Britt Vonk in the seventh decided the outcome of the game. Dagmar Bloeming and Lindsey Meadows combined to strike out ten with Meadows receiving the win. Stacie Townsend again went the distance, taking the loss.
