Softball Euros: Results July 31



Five days of play are over at the European Softball Championship Women in Valencia, Spain. One finalist for the title game on Saturday evening is set, one will follow tomorrow morning. The Netherlands defeated Great Britain 2-0 to clinch the berth. The British team will take on the Czech Republic at 9am on Saturday, hoping to follow. They had beaten Russia 3-2. Italy lost for another time on Friday morning and will finish the tournament in a disappointing sixth place.

Italy – Russia 1-2

Russia scored two runs on a RBI single by A Bukharova and an error en route to a 2-1 victory over Italy. D Castellani had put the Italian up 1-0 in the first with a RBI single. Ekaterina Eronina (W 2-1) out-dueled Leslie Malerich (L 2-1) afterwards to seal the win. Eronina struck out nine in seven innings, allowing four hits, a run and two walks. Malerich conceded six hits, two runs and a bb, also going the distance. With the loss, Italy finished in sixth place.

Slovakia – Austria 1-2

After both teams exchanged zeros for six innings, Austria finally came through in the seventh, scoring twice on a RBI fielder’s choice and a sac fly. Slovakia countered with a run in the bottom of the frame, but weren’t able to come back completely. Martina Lackner (W 2-1) issued one unearned run on one hit and a walk in 6 2/3 innings. She struck out eight. Lucia Lencsesova (L 0-2) surrendered four hits, two unearned runs and four bb in seven innings. Austria finishes the tournament in seventh place, while Slovakia has to settle for tenth.

Czech Republic – Netherlands 5-6 (8)

The Dutch team was on the verge to lose their first game in the tournament, but got away again. The Czech Republic scored five runs in the first five innings for a commanding 5-0 lead. But the Netherlands answered with one run in the sixth and four in the top of the seventh, getting help by three errors to tie the contest. In the eighth, M Witteveen scored the decisive run on another error. E Rendlova hit a three-run homerun for the Czech team. L Jaklova drove in two. Starrenburg went four-for-five with two runs scored and a RBI. Femke van Dusschoten (W 2-0) picked up the win after four innings of relief. Jana Vacikova (L 0-2) took the loss.

Great Britain – Germany 11-0 (5)

The British team used an eight-run second to crush Germany 11-0 in five innings. Stacie Townsend (W 4-2) pitched four perfect innings, striking out seven. She also hit a solo homerun. Headley-Coop and K Yoshizawa combined for five RBI. Anna Neuser (L 1-3) issued one hit, five runs (1 ER) and a bb in 1 2/3 innings.

Czech Republic – Russia 3-2

A sac fly by L Jaklova in the bottom of the fifth led to the 3-2 win by the Czech Republic over Russia. With the loss, the latter finishes in fourth place. The Czech team still has a chance for the finals. Jitka Horova pitched four brilliant frames in relief, giving up just one walk, while striking out one. Anna Moiseeva took the loss.

1st-2nd

Netherlands – Great Britain 2-0

Rebecca Soumeru (W 3-0) led the Netherlands to a 2-0 shutout over Great Britain, allowing just three hits and a walk in seven innings. She struck out eight. N Gosewehr and C Versluis drove in both runs in the fourth. Stacie Townsend couldn’t save the British team this time, giving up six hits, a run and two bb in 5 2/3 innings. She struck out three. However they got another chance on Saturday morning against the Czech Republic. The Dutch team waits in the finals.
