Softball Euros: Results July 28

Two days are played at the European Softball Championship in Valencia, Spain. Great Britain, the Netherlands and Italy sit atop of the standings in both pools as the only remaining undefeated teams. The preliminary phase ends on Wednesday.

Netherlands – Russia 7-0 (5)

Rebecca Soumeru (W 1-0) allowed just two hits and a walk in five scoreless innings to lead the Dutch team to a 7-0 shutout against Russia. N Gosewehr and V Anneveld combined for four RBI. Anna Moiseeva (L 0-1) conceded nine hits, seven runs and three bb in 4 2/3 innings.

Spain – Czech Republic 1-8 (6)

The Czech team picked up win number one in the tournament with an 8-1 victory over host Spain. Jana Vacikova started the game with six strikeouts in three one-hit innings. Jitka Horova (W 1-0) got the win in relief. L Petraskova went four-for-four with a double and three RBI. Beatriz Parejo (L 0-2) surrendered seven hits, six runs (5 ER) and a walk in three innings.

France – Austria 0-8 (5)

Martina Lackner (W 1-0) pitched five scoreless no-hit innings against France, allowing just a walk to lead Austria to an 8-0 shutout. She struck out four. D Orlovits scored three times. B Pischinger drove in two. Laurence Cornaille (L 0-2) issued seven hits, eight runs (5 ER) and four bb in five innings.

Great Britain – Slovakia 15-0 (4)

Great Britain scored nine runs in the opening period en route to an easy 15-0 win in four innings over Slovakia. Headley-Coop went three-for-four with a grand slam, a double, two runs scored and five RBI. Hayley Punter and Sarah Jones (W 1-0) combined to throw four scoreless one-hit innings. Barbora Sladekova (L 0-1) issued eleven hits, eleven runs and two bb in 1 1/3 innings.

Austria – Netherlands 0-12 (6)

Austria managed to hold the Netherlands scoreless in the first two frames, but the Dutch offense finally came through in the third and built up the score afterwards to win 12-0 in six innings. Kirsten Scheele (W 1-0) gave up just one hit in six scoreless innings, striking out seven and facing one batter over the minimum. Erica Monetti (L 0-1) issued eight hits, six runs (5 ER) and three bb in four innings. A Speel homered and drove in two. B Vonk scored three times.

Germany – Russia 3-4

Russia improved to 2-1 in the tournament with a 4-3 win over Germany. O Gavrilova decided the outcome with a solo homerun in the seventh. Germany had tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. Ekaterina Eronina (W 2-0) allowed three hits, two runs and three bb in six innings of relief. She struck out six. Lisa Jansen (GER) gave up six hits and three runs (1 ER) in 5 1/3 innings. Anna Neuser (L 1-1) allowed the decisive homerun.

Italy – Spain 3-0

Box score

Host Spain remains hitless after three games, as Italy shut them out 3-0. Lisa Birocci (W 1-0) struck out seven in five strong innings, allowing just one hit. Daniela Castellani closed it out for the save. Rosa Maria Blanes (L 0-1) conceded eleven hits, three runs and a walk in 5 1/3 innings.
