During a press conference on Thursday morning in Paris the organizing committee of the 2024 Olympic Games announced that they will propose breakdancing, sport climbing, skateboarding and surfing to be included as additional sports to the program.
Paris 2024 is due to submit their recommendations for new sports prior to an IOC Executive Board meeting from March 26 to 28 in Lausanne. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) needs to approve the proposals with an IOC Session in June 2019 and an Executive Board meeting in December 2020.
Breakdancing would make its debut on the Olympic program, although it was featured during the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. Sport climbing, skateboarding and surfing also are additional sports at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo together baseball/softball and karate.
Baseball/softball will return to the Olympic Games in 2020 for the first time since 2008. The snub by the Paris 2024 organizers is a setback, as the sports hope to receive permanent status on the Olympic program, especially since the 2028 Olympic Games will take place in Los Angeles.
While the recommendations of Paris 2024 does not mean baseball/softball won’t be in the 2024 Olympic Games, chances for an inclusion now will be slim and depend heavily on a rousing success of the baseball/softball tournaments at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
