Russia has won the 16U European Softball Championship, which was played in Ostrava, Czech Republic this past week. In the Gold Medal Game on Saturday they defeated host Czech Republic 1-0 behind strong pitching of Nina Zakaznikova, who allowed just six hits and a walk in six scoreless innings, and a third-inning run by Karine Martirosian.
On their way to the title, Russia entered the page system final phase as the number-three seed. They defeated Belgium 7-2 in the first playoff game. They followed this up with a 3-2 win over big favorite Netherlands, which had a 2-0 lead after three innings. The Dutch team already had lost its clean slate in the tournament, when they lost 1-4 to the Czech Republic, which sent the host directly into the final.
Overall 12 teams participated in the successful 46-game tournament in Ostrava. Russia, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Great Britain formed the top six. Apolena Vyborna (CZE) was named Most Valuable Player during the closing ceremony, Anastasia Makeshina (RUS) best batter and Pavlina Mencikova (CZE) best pitcher.
