Due to shortstop Ian Desmond attending the birth of his new child the Washington Nationals called up outfielder Roger Bernadina to fill the open roster spot. He already had three plate appearances in two games as defensive replacement. After lining out in his first game on Tuesday, the Curacao native went 2-for-2 with a double after entering the game on Wednesday in the seventh inning. Manager Jim Riggleman said to the Washington Post that Bernadina might remain with the team even after Desmond returns. The 26-year-old had lost his spot on the big league roster to Laynce Nix at the end of Spring Training.
