Dutch right-hander Rick van den Hurk has a shot for the title in his first season in Korea Baseball Organisation (KBO). His Samsung Lions won a thrilling regular season with a 75-51 record (two ties) in front of the LG Twins (74-54), Nexen Heroes (72-54-2) and the Doosan Bears (71-54-3).
With their first place finish the Lions have reached the Korea Series for a fourth straight season, hoping to capture their third championship in Korea in three years. In the first round of the playoffs the Nexen Heroes and the Doosan Bears square off with the winner taking on the LG Twins. The winner of that matchup then will face the Samsung Lions in the best-of-seven championship series. The Doosan Bears, Nexen Heroes and LG Twins are all based in Seoul, while the Samsung Lions are from Daegu.
Van den Hurk appeared in 24 games for the Samsung Lions this year, going 7-9 with an ERA of 3.95.
