On May 4, 2019 Athletic Sofia beat Buffaloes Blagoevgrad in what proved to be a fitting Game 1 of the new season in the Bulgarian Baseball League. A number of lead changes, a great number of runs, a couple of dozen hits, including three homeruns, a good deal of defensive blunders, and a blown save: were all featured in a thrilling game that was capped off by a bottom of the 9th walk-off squeeze bunt play. Athletic took the win 10:9. Later during the day, the Buffaloes rebounded by demolishing Junak Sofia and ruining Junak’s home opener in a mercy-rule shortened 25:5 game. In the meantime, reigning champions Sofia Blues took their first game of the new season in dominant fashion against the Coyotes Dupnitsa: a high scoring 14:8 victory. On Sunday, May 5, the Blues took down Athletic 4:0 thanks to a three-hit shutout performance by Evgenii Chernozemski and took the lead in the current standings. Later, Junak rebounded from their loss the previous day by narrowly defeating Lions NSA Sofia 5:4 in another nail-biter.
