Results Austrian Baseball League May 1&2

Posted on May 2, 2010 by philipp

The Attnang-Puchheim Athletics moved into second place in the Austrian Baseball League standings after sweeping the doubleheader against the Schwechat Blue Bats. In game one Arian Quirantes hit two homeruns in a 21-1 rout in six innings. In the second match Miles Etheridge (Athletics) and Daniel Hayes (Blue Bats) opposed each other on the mound and the A’s held on to a 4-3 victory after scoring two runs each in the sixth and the seventh.

The SUPERFUND Wanderers defended their clean slate with a pair of wins over the Stock City Cubs. They scored five runs in each end of the twin bill, while allowing just two. Johannes Godler won the pitcher’s duel against Reed Brown in the second match. Last year’s runner up Schwaz Tigers hit six homeruns and celebrated their first two home wins of the season against the promoted Rohrbach Crazy Geese.

On Sunday the Union Kufstein Vikings concluded week three in the ABL with two victories against the Vienna Metrostars. The Vikings scored five runs in the opening period of game one en route to a 13-3 win. In the second game they put four runs on the board in the third and later stopped a comeback try by the Metrostars to prevail 5-4.

I saw the second game between the Wanderers and the Cubs:
+ very good performance by both starting pitchers
+ nice hits and solid defense from the Vienna-catcher
+ fine defensive plays from Vienna-LF (running catch, run saving throw to home plate) and Vienna-3B (leaping catch, bare hand throw)
+ nice field, a lot of spectators, good music
    – too many errors on routine plays
    – few hits
    – too many looking Ks
    – no RBI (all the runs were scored on errors or passed balls)
