The BUCHBINDER LEGIONAERE are off to a good start into the best-of-five series in the Baseball-Bundesliga finals. They defeated the TORNADOS 6-3 on Saturday to take a 1-0 lead. REGENSBURG decided the outcome in the eighth, when they broke a 3-3 tie. Alex Lauterbach led off with a solo homerun to make it 4-3. Klaus Hopfensperger and Cedric Bassel, with the help of two errors, scored later in the frame to add a pair of insurance runs on the board.
The LEGIONAERE came through first, when they scored three runs in the fourth on a squeeze bunt by Mic Weigl and a two-run hit by Los Angeles Angels prospect Ludwig Glaser, who had three hits on the day. But MANNHEIM wasn’t shocked for long, as they evened the score in the sixth on runs by Chris Falls, Jens Heymer and Eddie Aucoin.
Philipp Hoffschild (REG) started for the home team and picked up the win. Paul Waterman (MAT) pitched seven-plus innings, took the loss and left after giving up the go-ahead run through Lauterbach’s solo shot.
Game two is scheduled for Sunday, September 14th at 13:00 CET at the Armin Wolf Arena in Regensburg.
Notes: Besides Glaser, Cincinnati Reds minor leaguer Donald Lutz and former Minnesota Twins talent Rodney Gessmann were also in the starting lineup of REGENSBURG….600 people were in attendance… the usual regular corner infielder Lauterbach started on short
