Regensburg opens new Week in Bundesliga with Sweep over Atomics

Posted on June 3, 2010 by philipp

After Wednesday’s game between Regensburg and Neuenburg was rained out, both teams met on Thursday afternoon for a doubleheader, opening another week in the German Baseball-Bundesliga. It was the expected slugfest for the first-ranked Buchbinder Legionaere, which celebrated lopsided 19-0 and 11-1 seven-inning wins over the eighth-ranked Atomics.

Chris Howard hit two homeruns in game one, while Petr Cech collected three hits, three runs and four RBI. Boris Bokaj issued just one hit and three walks in four scoreless innings. Janos Daroczi took the loss.

In game two Matt Vance had four hits, including three doubles to lead the Regensburg offense. They picked up 14 hits, half of them for extra bases. Jerome Burton Jr. allowed an unearned run on five hits and two walks in six innings, striking out seven. Alex Aucoin drove in the lone run for Neuenburg in the first, but also was charged with the loss.

The make-up game between the Gauting Indians and the Mainz Athletics, which also was scheduled for Thursday afternoon, was canceled due to rain. Both teams will play again on Sunday with Gauting taking on the Mannheim Tornados and the A’s traveling to the Haar Disciples. Additionally the Atomics will host the Saarlouis Hornets at home. In the north two doubleheaders will be played on Saturday and two on Sunday.
